For over sixty years, between 1915 and the early 1980s, the Banania ad campaigns featured a tirailleur sénégalais (a member of the special unit of African infantrymen in the French army) on Banania posters and boxes ( NégriPub, 73, 156). The image portrayed was one of a smiling African man wearing the special uniform and hat of the unit.
